Winter to Spring Transition Style
It’s that time of year . . . time to think about how to transition your style between seasons, specifically winter to spring. I know, I know. It’s not spring quite yet, but I can see it if I peek around the corner.
Since the first part of spring typically doesn’t deliver super warm weather in most parts of the country (you’ve heard March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb, right?), layering is key. But what’s different about the layering we’ve been doing all winter and winter to spring transition layering?
The difference is COLOR and TEXTURE! It’s time to lighten up and brighten up while keeping warm.
There are endless ways you can transition stylistically from winter to spring. Here are a few ways that I’m transitioning my outfits.
Add a Denim Jacket (or Other Lightweight Jacket)
An easy way to stay warm while lightening up your look is to add a light jacket as a layer. I love the look of a denim jacket, especially a light wash denim to break up the dark palette of winter. I’m still wearing black in this photo, but by layering on the denim jacket, the look feels more fun, a littler brighter. This is a well-worn favorite denim jacket – part of it’s cool-factor, in my opinion, are the frayed edges. I love it!
You can swap the denim jacket for any lightweight jacket you have, especially one that brings in a lighter or brighter color. Cardigan sweaters work in the same way.
Wrap Your Neck in a Fun Scarf
There’s nothing like a scarf to fend off the chill of late winter and early spring. But I’m so tired of black and gray. So I pull out my bright, springy scarves. I still keep warm but don’t look like I should be hibernating in a cave. This fun pink print scarf was a find from my Valentine outfit try-on session at White House Black Market. Choose a scarf with a shade that lifts your spirits. I have a fun striped one that incorporates spring shades of aqua, pink, coral.
Lighten Up Your Jewelry
In this case, I’m literally lightening up with this fun white leather cuff bracelet. Bring out some of your more springy/summery jewelry to incorporate into your outfit. It’s okay if it stands out a bit (like the white bracelet with black jeans and top). It’s even more fun to wear something unexpected! (Bracelet is from Obsessed boutique in Petaluma, CA.)
I’m also wearing my lightweight silver hoops. They have an airy feel to them, making them a great accessory for transitioning to spring.
And the Shoes
These cream colored boots have become my latest obsession. And they are perfect for lightening up a winter outfit silhouette. What about you? Do you have some tan or beige, blush or pink shoes or boots. Or what about a pair of flats to de-winterize your look (still too cold for me to give up my boots). Check out the fun How to Wear White Boots post.
This is just the beginning
There are so many options for incorporating a bit of spring into your look while it still feels so much like winter.
Your purse is another way to accessorize for a winter to spring transition. Use a lighter color bag, like pink, gray, even cream or white (check out last week’s post, A Purse Parade! for some inspiration and ideas).
As always, the most important thing is to have fun with your style. That’s what clothes and accessories should be about.
Now, let’s hope that our spring weather is not far off!
