Baby It’s Cold Outside!
Time for Winter Coats
Coat season has arrived. It seems that here in Northern California we went from summer to cool fall temps overnight. I moved summer out of my closet and replaced it with winter, including my collection of coats. I’m not doing much clothes shopping right now, but rediscovering my cold weather clothes kind of felt like I have some new things. I have realized that I’m not the kind of blogger that can feature new clothing pieces every week. I just don’t need that many clothes and already have more than I can wear in my casual life. So I’m trying to focus on shopping my closet, being creative, trying combinations I haven’t tried before. I have a feeling that a lot of us are in the same situation since our social events and travel and in many cases even work life have changed so much and kept us in our homes.
My small assortment of winter coats has some style variety that I thought I’d share. In the process of creating this post and curating a selection of coats of all styles that you might be able to shop, I discovered that most of the coats I found and loved are on sale. Plus, Black Friday sales will undoubtedly start early this year – many next week. It’s a perfect time to add a new coat style to your winter wardrobe. I’m tempted too!
Note: I hadn’t planned on photographing indoors – indoor photography isn’t my forte. But by the time I was ready for my photo session, it was raining (I guess that was an appropriate weather event considering the post is focuses on winter wear!). So I did my best with the photos for this post, but I would have had more fun with some more interesting outdoor settings.
Reversible Car Coat
I fell in love with this casual and cozy coat a couple of years ago. The reversible feature with camel on one side and gray on the other makes it really versatile. I do wish it had a way to close – a button or belt – but the lack of that doesn’t make me like it less. This coat came from Banana Republic. They do have a current reversible coat with a bit more style. The current style is $299, but it may go on sale soon. Check it out here: Banana Republic Reversible Coat
Here is the original full post featuring this reversible coat.
Military Style Long Coat
I’ve had this coat for a number of years. I don’t actually wear it much because, I guess, I’m not outside for long periods of time when it’s that cold. I think of this as a more dressy coat. Although I don’t think military inspired fashion is currently trending, this type of long length, wool or wool blend, black coat is pretty timeless. I wouldn’t be surprised if you have something like it in your closet. A classic, below-knee coat is a staple and worth the investment.
This is one of my favorites. It’s not a super warm coat, but the style is endless. It’s always fun to have a coat with style flair in your coat collection. I love the waterfall collar and handkerchief style hemline; both features give the coat a bit of drama. This coat is by one of my favorite brands, Testimony Los Angeles. This brand isn’t budget priced, but it’s so worth the cost (most jackets and coats range between $175 and $250) because you’ll wear it over and over and over. The fabric is a super soft and stretchy French terry. I have purchased all of the Testimony jackets and coats I have from my friend Gerie’s boutique. Consider adding a coat with a bit of style flair just for fun this season.
Above Knee Coats
A coat that hits above the knee is one of the easiest to wear, making it likely one of the most versatile and wearable styles. Both of the coats below are boiled wool. They are lightweight but super warm.
The pink coat is a structured style, and with the whimsical buttons and patch pockets, it’s a statement “accessory” too. I happened on this coat a long time ago in a boutique in Healdsburg, California. It was priced at a sale I couldn’t pass up. I actually don’t wear it much – I guess I don’t have a lot of opportunities that call for a hot pink coat! But consider adding a fun statement style to your coat collection. I recommend looking for a good sale on a style like this, since you many not wear it a lot. Here’s a post that featured this coat.
Classic Trench – It’s Pink!
There’s nothing more classic than a trench coat. You probably have one or two hanging in your closet. But how about a surprise twist on an expected classic! Look for a trench in something other than black or tan for a trench with personality. I happened upon this trench at Banana Republic a couple of years ago. I wasn’t in the market for a pink trench, but sometimes you have to nab those unique styles when you have the opportunity. Next time you’re looking for a trench, try one in an unexpected color. Here’s the original post about this trench coat.
Coats, Coats, Coats!
I had a ton of fun curating this selection of coats of all styles. Although I didn’t feature a puffer style in this post, puffers have not gone away and are even showing up in a variety of fresh styles. My favorite casual puffer (it’s not too puffy) is from Uniqlo. I like the Ultra Light Down Jacket – it’s so lightweight and travels easily. Puffer styles are included in this selection. Many of the styles below are on sale for really great prices. Have fun browsing!
