Simple and Polished – A White Button Shirt and Jeans
If you follow the Dez & Dot blog, you know that I love to feature outfits that includes an eye catching accessory, pattern, color, or style. But that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate a classic, understated look.
And there’s nothing more classic than a white button up shirt. (I was going to call it a button down shirt, but then I learned that’s what a man’s shirt with a button-down collar is.) Especially when worn with a casual pair of jeans.
Less is more in some cases. And a simple white shirt and jeans look definitely falls into that category.
In the looks below, I’ve paired a white shirt (I found it at Uniqlo while on the hunt for one that checked all my white button shirt boxes, and it was on sale for $9.90! And bought it in pink and black too.) with my AG Farrah skinny ankle jeans. You may know that AG is my favorite brand. The brand is pricey, so most of my collection has been purchased during sales. I’ve linked some similar AG jeans styles below that are at Nordstrom Rack at really low prices for AG (the full-price range is $150-$250). These jeans just fit me really well and they last forever.
Each look below also shows the white button shirt worn a slightly different way to give you ideas of how to give this classic a different vibe depending on your mood or the occasion you are dressing for.
Tails Out with Wedge Sandals
Untucked is a style. Leaving your white shirt (or any color) untucked creates a laid back, informal appearance. Since for many years the rule was to always tuck in a button up shirt, it has a bit of rebel in its vibe.
This untucked look with a casual and comfy pair of wedge sandals reinforces the easy going and relaxed expression.
Half-Tuck and Sneakers
Wearing a half-tuck turns classic into trendy and says “I’m cool but not trying hard to be perfect!” Pairing the look with a pair of sneakers gives it a down-to-earth feel. The shiny silver mesh Superga sneakers elevate the casual vibe a notch. These silver mesh Supergas aren’t available any longer, but linked below are other colors in the mesh style.
Front Tie and Chunky Heels
Want to dress up a white button up shirt and jeans look? Add heels! I love these peep toe booties that I added to my shoe wardrobe a couple of years ago (Vince Camuto). The heels are pretty high for me, but I love the look and feel like the height creates a svelte silhouette. Another way to wear a white shirt with tails is to knot it in front, which I’ve done here.
Belted with Pumps
Here’s a classic look. Tuck in the shirt, add a black belt and black pumps, and the look will take you to a lot of places that a more casual jeans look won’t.
Animal Print Loafers
You don’t have to go understated all the way with a white button shirt and jeans outfit. Bring an eye-catching pair of shoes into the mix and you’ve created a different story. Animal print is a classic/not classic fun way to jazz up a classic look. These leopard loafers are a fun surprise in an understated look. I have a pair of Dalmatian print flats that would be great too – still animal print but a little quieter. Snake is very trendy this season – give it a try! Or add a shoe in a fun color to the outfit.
A few things I’ve learned about finding and wearing a white button up shirt:
- All white button ups are not the same. I had some specifics I was looking for in a white shirt. Mine had to be soft and a little flowy, not too sheer.
- For a different look, roll up the sleeves. It gives a more casual appearance and works well on warmer days.
- I don’t like to iron, so a shirt that isn’t a “must iron” is important to me. I use a fabric steamer to give it a finished look and relax the fabric. I highly recommend a steamer – I use mine all the time. I have two: a full-size, standing steamer and a hand-held, portable one for travel.
- Often a white shirt can be a bit see-through. I wear either a white or nude color camisole underneath to be sure I’m not sharing too much! Also, it’s fun to wear a cami with a little lace embellishment along the top that peeks out when one or two top buttons are undone.
