The Perfect Easy-Fit Button Shirt
You probably don’t know this, but I’ve been on a search for a classic button shirt for a long time. I wanted to find one that had the perfect combination of classic and simple elegance that could be just the right thing for any occasion – dressy or casual. I was pretty much willing to pay anything to find it, knowing that classics don’t go out of style and figuring that my cost per wear (see below) would be low even for an expensive option.
Lo and behold! My perfect shirt was waiting for me at Banana Republic. I test drove the white version of the Dillon Classic Fit Shirt. It passed all of my criteria with flying colors. So I added the black. And once my first impressions were confirmed (yes – it was a winner), I nabbed the shirt in a leopard print.
Dillon Classic Fit Shirt
Although this versatile shirt isn’t made from expensive, fancy fabric (it’s 100% polyester), it holds its own and does a pretty good impersonation of expensive. It retails between $48 and $80, depending on whether you get lucky with a sale.
It’s super easy to care for – just wash and dry. I always like to give my tops a few minutes in a very low heat dryer (seriously, 5 minutes max) and then hang to dry the rest of the way. This shirt also responds really well to steaming to get out a wrinkle or crease that might be left over. (If you don’t have a steamer at home, you NEED to get one. Here’s a full size model that I like and a hand held. I use the small hand held steamer for travel, but it’s perfectly good to use as a home steamer as well.)
The fabric in the lighter colors is a bit sheer. So wearing a camisole underneath is a must. Under my white shirt I’ve worn a nude color cami (gives the look of no cami but covers up your undergarments), a white cami (it shows, but that’s a look so no big deal), and, for fun, a black cami like you see in the photo below. Each look is perfectly acceptable and the fun part is, you can go with your mood! Want to be a bit playful? Wear a dark contrast color underneath.
Actually, even the black is a little sheer, inviting the addition of a camisole under the shirt. Try a black cami with a little lace edging that peeks out. Have fun with it!
Do You Have This Classic in Your Closet?
A classic shirt like this should be a staple in every woman’s closet. Although at first glance it may seem to lack personality, it’s just not true. Wear a contrast color or lace edged camisole underneath, roll up the sleeves for a super casual vibe, top it with a jeans jacket, leather moto jacket, or classic blazer to fit any occasion and mood, dress it up with statement jewelry.
This shirt may actually be the most versatile piece in your closet, and the most economical. Remember that CPW (cost per wear) formula: price of the shirt divided by the number of times you wear it = cost per wear. If you paid full price and wore the shirt 20 times, it would only cost $4 per wearing.
