I became a fan of joggers at the start of the pandemic when we were all working from home and no longer wearing “regular” clothes (see that post).
In the last few years, joggers have taken on a much more mainstream role in casual attire, now becoming a style that bridges the gap between hanging around the house or exercising and formal wear.
Smoosh together two style trends: cargo pants and joggers, and the chic new identity of joggers, and we get:
Dressy cargo joggers
Yep–athleisure cleans up nice!
If you follow me on this blog or on Instagram, you probably know that our youngest son is getting married soon. As MOG (mother of the groom), my main job has been to find my perfect outfits for the various wedding events (oh, and to be supportive too). Not a bad gig! 🥳
I was trying on shoes to wear with my MOG dress the other day, I happened to be wearing my favorite Athleta Trekkie North Joggers (I recently did a post reviewing the updated style). I realized the look of joggers with a heeled shoe looked pretty cute.
Hmmm . . . Maybe I could create a fun and appropriate outfit for one of the wedding events with “dressy” joggers.
I found a pair of “dressy” cargo joggers (they have a little shine to the fabric) while browsing the sale at Banana Republic Factory (see them here in seven colors, and as of this writing, all on sale for $35 and all colors available in all sizes.)
What’s a Jogger Anyway?
Before we get into the styled outfits, let’s do a quick review of jogger pants history.
Joggers were originally intended to be worn for exercise, but like so many pieces from the athleisure trend, the mainstream has caught on and they can now be worn for many occasions.
In general, joggers are traditional sports pants that are lightweight, comfortable, and have an athletic appearance. Joggers are widest at the top and taper down the leg, fitting the ankle closely. Most joggers feature either a drawstring waist or an elastic waist, and the ankles are kept close to the body through the use of elastic as well.
While joggers originally began as a form of sweatpants, today, they’re made of many different types of material and come in a variety of fits and styles that are more sophisticated and tailored.
Exploring What Goes with Dressy Cargo Joggers
Here’s the truth. This post is made up of outfits I put together as I simply explored what looks good with these “dressy” cargo joggers, so that I could put an outfit together that didn’t look weird.
Another truth: All the outfits look really good (imo).
Ergo . . . dressy cargo joggers are a winner. They go with every vibe.
Let’s jump in.
Note: In case it’s helpful, I ordered two sizes to try. The green pair is the bigger size (medium) and the red is size small. I think the larger size is a little too voluminous and drapey on me. For reference in case you’re interested in purchasing these cargo joggers, I am typically size 6 in pants. I find that clothes from the Banana Republic group of stores (Athleta, BR, Gap, Old Navy) run a little large. The size range available in this style is extra small to extra large.
10 Ways to Style Dressy Cargo Joggers
This post is chock full of photos showing ten different ways to style dressy cargo joggers. I think the looks are self-explanatory and adding additional written explanations won’t add value.
Some things to notice in these outfits:
- Some looks have heels and others are paired with flats or casual sandals.
- There are both shoes in contrast colors and styles that are more neutral colors and aren’t as “stand out.”
- Different top styles give a look a very different vibe. Tops run the gamat from super casual (tanks and t-shirts) to a little dressier (blouses and luxe fabric sleeveless tops).
- Some tops are tucked in, some sport a French tuck (only the front of the shirt is tucked in), and others are left untucked.
- And, of course, there is a variety of color combinations that I tried.
I have my favorite looks (I’ll admit I’m partial to the combo of pink and red). Let me know your picks. 🙋🏻♀️
Have fun checking out the looks. Are you going to try dressy joggers?
Shoes in This Post
I’ve already linked the pants above. The tops in this post are from my closet and none have been purchased recently. However, the black t-shirt is my favorite from Gap, the Modern Crewneck T-shirt.
The shoes in this post are listed below in order of appearance in this post. In some cases, the exact style isn’t available, so I’ve linked a very similar style from the same manufacturer.
