Are you a jeans wearer during the summer? I didn’t used to be. But in recent years, my jeans are on rotation all year long. I do move my heavier weight jeans to the back of my closet at this time of year. And I’ve discovered that retailers offer a summer jeans option – lighter weight jeans that work well for the season’s warmer weather. I’ve also realized that the updated silhouette of the straight crop jeans style is perfect for warm weather casual activities and outings. Even in summer, jeans are an outfit option in many locations.
(I seem to be on a jeans kick recently. But we wear them so much, and I imagine that you, like me, are always looking for the newest styles and how to wear them.)
Crops Are the Perfect Summer Jeans!
The straight crop jeans style is a perfect jeans option for the warm weather season.
The “new” silhouette for crop styles are not the crops we wore several years ago. You know what I’m talking about – they hit just below the knee, sometimes skinny, sometimes loose. We all wore them. But no more! It’s time to update. The current trend for crops is a wider leg opening that hits above the ankle.

The straight crop style has some positives to consider when thinking about adding a pair to your summer jeans wardrobe:
- the wide opening at the hem balances the hips for a flattering shape,
- the leg opening invites a little air circulation in warm weather,
- sandals and sneakers work perfectly with the style,
- it’s a fun and very on-trend look.
Jeans Pattern & Distressing
This pair of slim crop Wit & Wisdom jeans has an added bit of fun with a striped pattern and a bit of distressing. The detail is hard to see in the photos, but take a look at the zoomed in detail below.
Distressing. I have a kind of love-hate attitude about distressing. It’s very “in” but I’m really careful about placement and percentage of distressing.
If there’s a large rip around the knees, that’s a loud no for me. It pretty much frames the less than tight skin at my knees. No thank you! Also, I really don’t want skin showing, so any distressing has to be backed by fabric or stitched closed like the distressing here. (I’ve even added an iron-on patch behind distressing in the past so skin wasn’t showing through but the distressing was still visible. It works really well.)
The Updated Straight Crop Look Has Won Me Over
It took me a while to get used to this style of a short pant leg that’s wider at the hem. But as we’ve moved from cold weather to spring, I’ve warmed up to the look. I’ll say again that it can be a really flattering shape – the wide pant leg a the bottom visually gives balance to the hips, typically the widest part of the female shape.
Casual Shoes Styles Perfectly Accessorize
Style straight crop jeans with sandals or a casual sneaker. (Pictured in this post are my favorite Rothy’s* slip-on sneakers in the color sand.) A slide sandal is a perfect look as well.
*If you haven’t tried Rothy’s yet, treat yourself! There are a number of styles, but my go-to is the slip-on sneaker (I have 7 pairs!). You can get $20 off your first pair of Rothy’s (and I’ll get a $20 credit – thank you!) when you use my referral code: https://share.rothys.com/x/9zMBoE. After your first purchase, you’ll get your own referral code to share with friends and you can get credit from your friends’ purchases from your own link.
Want the Jeans a Little Shorter?
Straight crops work well with a rolled cuff too. If you want to shorten the length, this is an easy way to adapt the jeans.
This photo shoot was at Sonoma State University. We’re very lucky to live right next door to this beautiful campus. It provides endless locations for photos!

Linked below are straight crop jeans from some of my favorite brands. The Wit & Wisdom* striped style that I’m wearing in this post is the first image. Linked are a mix of styles with wider leg openings and some that are a little narrower. All of these are the “updated” crop jeans style.

The t-shirt I’m wearing in this post is one of my favorites – the Gap Modern Crewneck Half Sleeve tee. I love the sleeve that’s a little longer but still modern looking. The t-shirts (available in 9 colors) are on sale until Monday, June 6 – get 40% off when you use the code FLASH.
