Without fail every year when mid-March arrives I do a cautious happy dance (it’s a dance inside my head – no one can see it!) because I sense that spring is right around the corner. I know we are still going to have some not-so-springy weather, but being in March gives me permission to start to incorporate some lighter looks.
It’s the time of year when we want to wear things that look “lighter” (aren’t you getting so tired of black and gray?), but we still need to dress for some cooler temps that straddle winter and spring. At this time of year, I love wearing cotton sweaters. I’m especially loving this boyfriend style sweater that I discovered recently at the J. Crew Factory Store during a shopping outing with a couple of my close friends.
This particular sweater style is a true “boyfriend” sweater – well, not my boyfriend – but in the true sense of the term. These are men’s sweaters that I (and my two friends) loved and purchased for that casual, slightly oversized look.
I have the sweater in these two colors, a kind of salmon pink and this green (called faded bluegrass – which does kind of perfectly describe it!). It comes in an oatmeal color (I’m considering nabbing that one too), light blue, and red also. I have it in a small (men’s) – I think I could also wear the extra small and still have the loose silhouette of a boyfriend style (in women’s tops I’m usually a small and sometimes a medium for reference).
I’m showing these sweaters with blue denim skinny jeans (these are White House Black Market skinny ankle – I really love the fit and they are really well priced). Both colors would also look great with white jeans to transition to spring.
I’m showing the casual outfit with some different shoe styles. Each shoe look really changes the feel of the outfit.
In the first couple of photos I’m wearing my gray camo Rothy’s slip on sneakers (you know I’m a huge Rothy’s fan!). I use this camo print shoe as a neutral and it really goes with so many looks.
In the photos above and below I’ve paired the look with fun slip on oxfords in a leopard print by All Black (other prints available – so comfortable).
Shoes are a really fun way to add a little interest and dimension to your look. Don’t overlook a pair of shoes as a statement making accessory.
I’m a fan of pink, and I like that this sweater doesn’t scream PINK. I’ve paired this look with another of my Rothy’s* sneakers in the color sand. I really love the casual but polished look of the Rothy’s slip-on. (They are comfortable without socks but I’ll share that the most comfortable way to wear them that I’ve found is to wear the with Bombas low-cut no-show socks. Bombas socks** have been a game changer for me – I’m serious! Love the wool merino calf socks too – so warm in the winter.)
*If you want to try Rothy’s, use my referral code: https://share.rothys.com/x/DYQJPu and you’ll get $20 off your first pair of Rothy’s and I’ll get a $20 credit to use on my next pair (thank you!). **Try Bombas – I don’t think I’ll ever buy another sock brand. Use my referral code: https://refer.bombas.com/x/Jt2cns for 25% off your first purchase and I’ll get a $20 credit (thanks!).
Below I’ve thrown on my favorite jeans jacket. I’ve had it for so many years that it’s frayed on all the edges. I have two others that are in better condition, but I really love the worn look of this one – and it’s super comfy. It’s okay to wear denim with denim – don’t be afraid to try it. This favorite is from Gap – there are a number of variations on the denim jacket that Gap offers, but I love the basic style.
This last shoe pairing features Vince Camuto peep toe booties. I don’t typically wear heels this high – I know some of you probably do, especially if you’re petite. A higher heel adds extra leg length, which can be a slimming look for anyone. I wanted to show a look with a heel for this boyfriend style sweater and skinny jeans outfit. These are fun, but not my favorite shoe to walk in, so they, unfortunately, do spend a lot of time in the closet. They’re good shoes for going out to dinner – not much walking involved!
If you like the boyfriend sweater look, keep in mind that when wearing volume on top, it’s important to keep what you are wearing on the bottom a slimmer silhouette. This rule also applies in reverse – if you wear loose fitting pants make sure your top is more fitted.
This style rule may be turned on its ear as new pants styles are getting baggier and tops and jackets are leaning toward oversized. That’s the fun of fashion, it’s ever changing – I’m only a little panicked at the prospect of skinny jeans going out of style since I have a fairly hefty investment hanging in my closet! How about you? Have you embraced the baggier jeans styles yet? I’m always a little slow to incorporate new styles.
