We’ve just returned from a mini vacation on the island of Hawaii. When choosing clothes to bring that would be appropriate for the hot weather, I considered and then nixed bringing a pair of shorts. I own two pairs and haven’t worn them in several years, and only then when visiting tropical weather locations where people of all ages and shapes wear shorts regularly. It’s kind of a back and forth with me and shorts – should I or shouldn’t I, do I or don’t I?
My days of smooth bare legs are behind me. But there are still those extra warm days, particularly in a tropical location, when wearing a pair of shorts feels right. And I’m pretty sure I’m the only one who’s that focused on how I look in a pair of shorts.
While visiting Hawaii, my sister-in-law (who had invited us to share the spacious home they’d rented in Kamuela, also known as Waimea) and I popped into a Tommy Bahama store for a bit of island shopping. I was specifically interested in trying the Boracay shorts. I’d seen them on a friend a couple of years ago and thought they were a nice shorts option worth checking out.
Should We Care?
I’m going to admit right off the bat that I’m way outside my comfort zone featuring me in shorts for this post. Because I know there are so many women who give up on shorts after turning 50, I decided it was worth this bit of discomfort to visit this topic.
I go back and forth between “who cares” and feeling like exposing that much of my legs is a no. I now have visible veins and skin that sags a bit above my knees. But then I note (to myself) that when I see older women wearing shorts on hot days, I admire them and realize that the focus isn’t zeroed in on their legs but the overall look of the outfit.
10″ Bermuda Shorts
So here we go. I took home these two pairs of Boracay 10″ length bermuda shorts. (They come in 5″, 7″, 10″ lengths). They are comfortable, with 3% spandex for stretch but not stretching out. And they are available in 20 colors – something for everyone! This green color is called Tea Leaf.
I paired these green shorts with a white elbow sleeve tee from Gap and my favorite, super comfy Liat wedge sandals by Eric Michaels. These are my all-time go-to summer sandals. They are cute and beyond comfortable. I have them in three colors. They especially work well for me because the velcro closure straps can be adjusted for a custom fit, and with a low instep, I can get them to fit snugly. Every time I wear them, people comment. See these sandals in the widget below, as well as other similar Eric Michaels wedges.
This pretty pinkish color below is Vin Rose. I decided to go a little monochrome for a different look and paired it with the elbow sleeve t-shirt from Nordstrom in the color Pink Bride (check out my recent elbow sleeve t-shirt review post). I actually ended up wearing this shorts outfit all day and felt okay about it.
I’m wearing my other fave shoes, Rothy’s slip-on sneakers, with this outfit. Shorts and sneakers is a great pairing – casual and pulled together. I have these slip-ons in four colors now – love love love them. Use my referral code (https://share.rothys.com/x/dXnrZI) for $20 off your first pair of Rothy’s (plus, you’ll get your own referral code to share with friends that gives you a $20 credit for your next pair). Thank you for using my referral code if you decide to try Rothy’s.
Casual Linen Jacket
This linen raw edge jacket was another Tommy Bahama find. Its design is inspired by the classic jeans jacket, but it’s very lightweight. The raw edge feature is fun. It’s a perfect summer-weight topper for cool evenings and air conditioning.
Keep in mind that Tommy Bahama sizing is generous, and I downsized one size in everything I tried.
If you’re up for revisiting the shorts look for hot summer days and want a smoother leg look, a tan is helpful. Or this product is one I’ve used and like. I haven’t tried it with shorts, but I’ve used it occasionally when wearing a dress for a special occasion. It’s easy to apply, dries fairly fast, and doesn’t transfer to clothes. However, my research on the product (EWG Skin Deep) reveals that it contains ingredients that don’t fall into the safe ingredient category, so you may want to research it yourself before using.
Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs is available in several shades. You can find all shades here.

The Big Island – Hawaii
The island of Hawaii, commonly referred to as the Big Island because it’s the largest of the Hawaiian islands, is home to six volcanoes, including the largest volcano in the world, Mauna Loa. Four of the volcanoes on the island of Hawaii are considered active, with Kilauea active as recent as 2020. The landscape of this Hawaiian island can look eery with expansive fields of volcanic rock bordering the roads. These photos are taken just outside the house we were staying in. The volcanic rock is sharp and uneven and not something you want to climb on (although we did find a spot to cross the hardened lava – a bit scary!). It’s fascinating to see the shape of the path that the lava has taken.
Black Sand Beaches of Hawaii
The island of Hawaii is known for its black sand beaches. The sand is composed of basalt created by lava flowing into the ocean which explodes as it reaches the ocean and cools. The sand at this beach near where we stayed was more gray than black, but I’ve seen photos of other black sand beaches on the island that are much darker in color. It’s a dramatic landscape!
