Retro Sneakers – Step into this FalL Trend!
Let’s talk about the retro sneaker trend. I’m a little obsessed. And I don’t really know why.
It could be because the style, in laser-like fashion, sends me to an image of my workout wear, circa 1982. Picture high-cut-leg leotard + bright tights + scrunched down leg warmers + white Reeboks. Yep – I felt pretty workout fashionable!
I have a warm spot in my heart for those shoes. So now that retro sneakers are trending, I HAD to have a pair.
In this iteration, the retro sneaker style is in vogue and goes with just about any look.
If you don’t believe me, just do a simple Google search for white retro sneaker style and click “Images.” See what I mean?! This current version of the Reebok-inspired 1980s athletic shoes is paired with jeans, shorts, dresses, skirts, any style pants. Pretty much anything goes.
I’m not typically an early adopter of new trends (I’ve shared this before), but maybe because this shoe style is familiar to me, I’m a fan!
This post features six ways that I styled my new white retro sneakers below (yep, SIX), proving that this shoe style literally looks good with any kind of outfit. Since this post required multiple outfit changes, I opted for an indoor photo shoot, even though it’s not my favorite.-
I did a deep dive into my search for a pair of white retro sneakers. I ventured to the mall to check out the trending styles in department stores and came home with a pair of ECCO Street Lite Retro Sneakers from Nordstrom (they’re linked in the widget below). If you’re familiar with the ECCO brand, you know that they are focused on comfort – and they were really comfortable with great arch support. But . . . they just didn’t capture the look I was after. I realized I really wanted an Adidas or Reebok brand shoe. So I found myself scrolling Amazon for those brands.
Side note: This whole process was not completely selfish. Nope! I had you in mind as I researched retro sneakers. 😁
Retro Sneaker Trend
Before scrolling to the styled outfits, let chat a minute about the retro sneaker trend.
There are almost limitless variations on this look – white or colors, stripes or no stripes, running shoe style inspired or tennis shoe style inspired, platform or not. The options are exhaustive. I’m attracted to the “tennis shoe-inspired” look. Decide on your favorite look, then start a search. You’ll find more options than you might want to scroll through! I’ve curated some styles – both tennis shoe inspired and running shoe inspired – at the end of the post that you can use for browsing or shopping styles.
Retro Sneakers with Casual Jeans
This may be the look that comes to mind when you think about white retro sneakers. Throw on a pair of comfy jeans and a cozy sweatshirt, add the retro sneakers and you’re ready for running errands or a day at home.
With Wide Leg Pants
The next outfit pairs retro sneakers with wide leg pants. Depending on the pants style, this look could really be throwback to our flared pants of the 80s! For this iteration of retro sneakers, the outfit looks casually put together. Although the shoes are very laid back, they give the whole ensemble a trendy vibe.
With Crop Jeans
Any style of blue jeans works perfectly with retro sneakers. Don’t these just look like the perfect shoe for this jeans look?!
With Black Jeans
This look may not be a combo you’d have made. Black jeans and white sneakers? But it’s a yes! Google it and see all the images that come up of, mostly youngish, women sporting the look. And while us over 40 or 50 style loving women don’t want to dress like a 20 year old, we can be inspired by their enthusiasm to integrate trends in fun ways. I’m not sporting a crop top with my black jeans and white retro sneakers, of course. But I am interpreting this trend for my age. Yes to the white retro sneakers with black jeans. And yes to an appropriate top, in this case, an oversize sweater.
With Whimsical Pants
Let’s not be all serious about styling retro sneakers with outfits. There’s room some fun! I decided to pair my sneakers with some very cheery polka dot pants. I think the look works. The black and white color scheme tone down a bit the whimsical print pants, and the casual sneakers look just as appropriate as a pointed toe flat might.
This look is one that is perfect with retro sneakers. Joggers have become a staple for many people and athleisure is our go-to for everything from exercising, shopping, running errands, travel, to casual lunch dates and working from home. Adding a pair of retro sneakers to your shoe options will elevate your jogger look quite a bit from the “ready to exercise” vibe that comes with athletic shoes.
Note – These joggers are my absolute favorites: Athleta Trekkie North Joggers (currently on sale in all colors). I have them in four colors, wear them all the time, and have many friends who have purchased them on my recommendation and love them too. They are the most versatile item of clothing I own. Check out a previous post reviewing joggers.
Tennis Shoe Inspired White Retro Sneakers
Browse white retro sneakers below. The first pair in the widget are the Adidas shoes that I chose. I really wanted the three Adidas stripes. The second pair of Adidas was a runner up. It’s stripes are perforations, which are fun too. The third pair below are the ECCO retro sneakers I almost kept (the link defaults to the shoes in blue, but choose your favorite color from eight color options).
I’ve just worn my new sneakers walking pretty much all day. It was nice to have a comfortable pair of shoes for walking that didn’t look like an athletic shoe. They are comfortable but a little bit warm (which didn’t bother me at all). This is likely attributable to the synthetic materials that make up the shoe. From the description: Made with a series of recycled materials, this upper features at least 50% recycled content. This product represents just one of our solutions to help end plastic waste.
Running Shoe Inspired Retro Sneakers
The styles below are also a fun look. They’re a little more streamlined than the styles above.
