9 Ways to Make Skinny Jeans Cool
Are skinny jeans still cool? That’s the question that keeps popping into my head. And maybe yours too.
I know many of us over 50 gals have a lot of skinny jeans. What are we supposed to do with them now that jeans styles have taken a turn toward looser fits?!
I’m here to tell you (and me) that we can still wear our skinny jeans without feeling completely uncool.
Here’s the trick: Pair skinny jeans with trending clothing styles or accessories. Voilà! Your skinny jeans are cool again.
Here are NINE simple ways to make your skinny jeans feel modern and stylish.
ONE: Wear White Sneakers
An easy way to give your skinny jeans a modern boost is to simply wear them with a pair of white sneakers. Retro white sneakers are still trending and so comfy. Add a white tee and your skinnies are looking fly!
TWO: Add a Puffy Jacket
Puffy jackets have been popular for several years, and the trend is now super easy to find at most clothing retailers. This cute one is from Target.
shop puffy jacket–super affordable.
THREE: Wear with a White Button-Down Shirt & Mules
A white button-down shirt freshens any look. This crop style gives the classic a fun and youthful look–it’s not super short, so even if you’d never wear a crop shirt (I wouldn’t), this one works. I wear a cami under just to be sure I’m not showing any skin when I move. And the mule style flats (from Target) give the whole look a definite update.
FOUR: Lug Sole Boots + a Chunky Cardigan
Have you nabbed a chunky cardigan for the season? They’re pretty much everywhere. It’s a fun new take on a classic cardigan. This one is from Gap but is no longer available (similar sweater linked below). If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that lug sole boots have become my favorite updated boot style over the past few years. Nothing like a lug sole style updates a look so fast. And, yes, you can wear them even if you’re an amazing woman over 50. These white ones are my favorite and a steal from Amazon, plus super comfortable.
FIVE: Go Classic with Tall Boots and an Oversize Blazer
If you saw my post on the oversize blazer style a few weeks ago, then you know that it’s a trendy update on a classic blazer. What better way to make your skinny jeans look cool than topping them with an oversize blazer. Add tall boots (another trending style this fall and winter) and you’re all styled and looking fab.
SIX: Add Oxfords and a Loose-Fit Pattern Blazer
If you have black skinny jeans, they can be so versatile–they’re perfect for dressing up (see below) or going casual. This look is another (but different) oversize blazer vibe paired with fun oxford style shoes. I love oxfords–they give an outfit a whole different look and one that isn’t run of the mill. The blazer is the same style as the charcoal plaid one above, believe it or not, just in a larger size and with sleeves rolled. These details give it a whole different look.
One other thing to point out about this outfit: it combines colors (black and brown) that aren’t commonly combined in the same outfit by most of us. I don’t typically do it. But when I tried it for this look, it made me like wearing brown better. That’s what we need to do sometimes–try things to see how they feel and look.
SEVEN: Add Some Chunky–Loafers and a Sweater
As mentioned above, chunky sweaters, of all styles, are everywhere. And such a cozy, easy trend to wear. This sweater has become one of my go-tos. Pair it with skinny jeans, and it elevates the look to a very “in” vibe. Add some chunky loafers, and the skinny jeans outfit is cool!
EIGHT: Try Ballet Flats with a Stylized Jacket
Ballet flats are very in style right now–they’re kind of the perfect shoe because they can go with any look. These are from my very favorite brand, Rothy’s. The “stylized” jacket (weird term, but I didn’t know what to call it!) adds interest to the casual look with some eye catching details like a military vibe and asymmetric lines. This look doesn’t shout “TRENDY,” but it’s a quietly updated expression of skinny jeans.
NINE: Dress Them Up with Metallic Heels + Faux Leather Jacket
Our final cool skinny jeans look incorporates metallic heels and a faux leather moto jacket. Skinny jeans with festive and playful metallic heels (or flats) is a fun way to update a skinny jeans look for a party or night out.
I combined the black skinny jeans with a flowy off-white blouse and chose to style it untucked for a more casual vibe. I tried the blouse first with a nude cami underneath and then tried it with a black cami. They both work, but the visible waistline of the black jeans in the first image is a little distracting to me. I’d go with the black cami that’s also a little provocative and flirty. Wear one with a bit of lace trim and it’s even better!
And to top off the look, a faux leather moto jacket. Instant update and the skinny jeans are cool!
