Jeans Trends Part 1
Straight Crop Jeans
I’ve been a little anxious over the hype about new jeans style trends. I mean, I have about 25 pairs of skinny jeans – do I have to stop wearing them and replace my skinnies with the newest trends? And do I even like the new jeans silhouettes? It took me a while to like skinny jeans and now I have to get used to a whole new jeans style?
If you, like me, are trying to figure out the new direction of jeans styles, then this post (and a couple after it) might be helpful.
I’m not an early adopter of new style trends, believe it or not. It typically takes me one to two seasons to get used to a new trend and figure out if I actually like it well enough to wear it. That was the case with skinny jeans. I thought I’d never love that look on me. But here I am – I now have a closet full of skinnies, and it’s basically all I wear in the jeans department.
But yikes! Now we are seeing looser fits: mom jeans, balloon jeans, straight jeans, skater jeans, crops that are flared and straight crops. We’re again seeing wide flares and boot cuts and trouser styles. Waists have crept up again (goodbye muffin tops!).
As an over 50 person who loves style and wants to keep up with trends while keeping things age appropriate, what’s a girl to do?
It’s time to explore a little, get to know the new jeans trends, and figure out if I need to give up on my skinny jeans. Follow along and figure out if you’re ready to adopt these new trends.
I decided the only way to navigate this jeans jungle is to jump in and try some of the styles that feel fresh but don’t cross the line of way out there. However, I did put a slash through a couple of styles, beginning with the balloon style (high waist and very wide leg that tapers at the hem). It’s just a no for me. Another style I’m not interested in giving much attention, at least at this moment, is mom jeans. Been there; done that. The mom jeans style features a high waist (not a bad thing to define the waist) and a loose, relaxed leg that tapers at the ankle. I should never say never, because actually it could be a flattering look if the fit through the hips is nice and proportionate. But for now, I’m going to set that style aside.
Straight Crop Jeans – Style 1
What I will focus on in this post is the straight crop jeans style.
The jeans in this post are from White House Black Market. I’ve been impressed with the fit and quality of their jeans for some time. And the price is very reasonable – typically under $100.
These are the WHBM High Rise Straight Destructed Straight Jeans. I didn’t expect to like them much, but I have to tell you, I did feel in sync with the trends while I was wearing them.
The “destructed” feature is the distressing on the legs. I’d actually call it faux distressing, as the destructed areas are reinforced with fabric backing so there’s no skin showing and the areas are sturdy.
I experimented with several shoe styles and tops.
First I paired these straight crop jeans with my favorite Banana Republic Dillon Classic Fit Shirt (check out the post about this easy-to-wear, versatile shirt) and Rothy’s Points (love my camo Rothy’s). I haven’t worn belts much at all in years, but they seem to be making a comeback, so I added a favorite from my belt collection.
I swapped shoes and, staying with the flat vibe, I tried the look with a pair of animal print flats.
Surprisingly, I actually like the look!
The weather will be turning cold soon. Let’s try a fall/winter look.
Booties give the straight crops a whole different vibe. It definitely feels in style.
How about a lighter look? I just love the pairing of a white top with jeans, especially light colored denim. The heeled slide sandal (love love – they come in 13 colors!) elevates the look a bit, even with the casual white top. Style the jeans and shoes with a dressier top, and the look could take you to a dinner out.
I added a lightweight jacket topper for yet another look. I like it
These jeans could be a keeper. I didn’t really expect to like the look very much, but maybe seeing this trend on the streets and fashion forward women wearing it for some months has given me time to become accustomed to the look.
Straight Crop Jeans – Style #2
- paired with a t-shirt (Gap Modern Crewneck T-Shirt) and slide sandals (my favorites – I have them in 3 colors – and they’re on sale now), and
- styled with a cozy sweater and slip-on sneakers (Rothy’s*, of course!).
I admit that I’m not a fan of this style on me. However, I do like the casual vibe – it’s just not flattering on me.

Do We Have to Stop Wearing Our Skinnies?
The answer appears to be NO!
My research as I prepped for this post confirms that skinnies are here to stay – at least for a while. We love our skinny jeans, and no one is ready to write them off.
I read numerous articles about jeans trends, checked out other bloggers who have written on the topic, visited a lot of retail websites that specialize in denim – both premium/designer and budget – and it seems that, yes, we will still have skinny jeans as one of the jeans style options to wear.
In the end, it’s important to remember that wearing what we love and what makes us feel good should be our priority. There is no style characteristic more stunning than confidence.

White House Black Market Straight Crop Jeans
The jeans in this post are linked below, as well as an additional style with some embellishments on the legs. We rarely look like the people who model clothes. First of all, models are typically very slender (case in point, the middle woman is modeling the Curvy version of the jeans style!). Plus, there are all kinds of tweaks made so that clothes being photographed look perfect – sometimes they are altered to fit the model, sometimes there are clips/clothes pins behind the model making the clothes fit better. And, of course, we’ve all heard of the Photoshopping that happens. Obviously, I don’t look like the models – I’m a real person! Just keep in mind that you just want to find clothes that you feel good wearing and that flatter your unique features.
