My newest obsession is a long white duster-style cardigan. It was an unexpected purchase that came from a generous surprise birthday gift certificate to a fun boutique, Koze, in the beautiful bayside town of Tiburon, California. The surprise gift was presented to me during a weekend lunch date in Tiburon, following which three of us fashion loving ladies trekked across the street to Koze for an impromptu shopping spree. There’s an extra layer of fun when shopping with a gift certificate, and since Tiburon is almost an hour from where I live and not a place I visit regularly, the shopping was a “now” event. I came away with this fabulous long cardigan and a pair of white MOTHER Denim skinny jeans to complement it. Two perfect pieces to create a white on white styled outfit!
White on White . . . or not
I’ve always loved the look of a white on white outfit. But for some reason, I don’t wear it often, even though I love the look when I see others wearing it. It’s sophisticated simplicity. Maybe the reason I shy away from a completely white look is that the stark brightness of a pure white ensemble feels a little like it’s shouting. This toned down cream color pairing feels a bit more subtle to me.
The Star of this Outfit: Duster Cardigan
I was really happy to find this duster-style cardigan (by Nic + Zoe) in the extra-long long length. We see so many cardigans that hit just above or below the knee. The ankle skimming length of this one gives it that standout, “double-take” aspect. It’s just a tad different, which is exactly the kind of style I’m attracted to.
It probably seems to some of you strange to be talking about a long cardigan during the summer (by the way, yay, it’s officially summer!), but this one is very lightweight and a bit sheer. Where I live, not far from the Sonoma County coast, our summer days often begin and end with our natural “air conditioner” of the marine layer that floats in and keeps the area cool. We never pack away our extra top layer pieces because we still need them during the summer.
Styling White on White
When styling a white-on-white look, or any monochromatic outfit, it’s important to provide interest and balance the look by adding texture. In this outfit, the under layer jeans and tank both have a smooth texture, while the knit cardigan provides a texture contrast with its soft, muted composition.
Also, there are so many shades of white. Be sure to keep pieces within a few shades of each other for a harmonious look.
The contrast look of the lariat-style gold necklace adds interest to the look with color and the layered leaf design. The long necklace style is harmonious with the elongated silhouette of the outfit.
It’s important as we age to insert texture and interesting pieces into our style to draw the eye and focus on something other than features we’d prefer not to highlight (e.g., loose skin and wrinkles). This is the time to have fun with tastefully incorporating interesting accessories.
