If you read last week’s Spring Color Trends post, you may recall that blue has a pretty big role this spring’s color palette. This spring cardigan by Gap is so fresh looking and an easy way to perk up a spring collection without a huge investment.
I’m a bit picky about the style of cardigan I wear. I’m not a big fan of the classic cardigan, but this chunky style is a nice tweak to a traditional cardigan.
A cardigan with a hip-length hemline is very versatile. It can morph from a topper to a top. Just button up, and the cardigan becomes a cool-vibe sweater all on its own.
Then again, it is actually a cardigan sweater, and it’s very happy being worn open with a top underneath. I chose to wear an off-white tank under the blue cardigan, but there are a lot of options other than white that will work.
The look below, pushed up sleeves and rolled jeans, is a super casual take on the outfit.
These first two looks are paired with Rothy’s slip-on sneakers. Slip-on sneakers are such a great shoe option for spring – comfy and casual but more polished than a tie sneaker.
It’s easy to dress up this relaxed spring sweater and jeans outfit by simply adding a pair of fun heels. These are my current faves. The sweater worn unbuttoned is a little more casual than the buttoned sweater below. Just a subtle change can make a big difference in the look of an outfit.
A quick note about the strategy behind monochromatic, column dressing, like the look above with the matching top and jeans. When you wear the same color on top and bottom, it creates one long unbroken vertical line. The look is slimming. Add a topper in a contrasting color and the one-color column stands out.

Below are the pieces featured in the post.
The Gap Button-Front Cardigan comes in four colors: brown, beige, and black, in addition to the blue featured in this post.
I included a variety of white jeans, because, well, no two pairs of white jeans are the same. I’m wearing AG Prima in an off white color called Sulfur Dry Dust. It’s a nice switch from bright white. But bright white is very fresh and perfect for spring and summer.
The heels, Dolce Vita Party Slides, come in A LOT of colors and color combos. I’m wearing the color called Cafe, but I thought the cork version would be a fun and casual look for spring and summer, hence I featured that version. Click the image below to see all 17 colors. For a fairly high heel, these are really comfortable and such a fun style.
The assorted white jeans are from AG – premium brand and premium price – and Wit & Wisdom, a Southern California brand that is very budget friendly and many of the jeans incorporate figure flattering features.
