Fall Layering Pieces in Trending Colors
It’s fall layer season! And sweaters-pumpkin lattes-cozy jackets-falling leaves-boots-crisp mornings season!
It’s the season for lightweight toppers that we can layer over our tank tops and t-shirts when the temperatures of early fall get chilly.
Although I’ve never professed to be as much a fan of fall as some, I do have a drawerful of chunky sweaters that I’m kind of excited to wear again.
But hold on!
Right now we’re in that summer to fall transition season (at least where I live). Are you experiencing this too? Mornings start out with jacket weather, afternoon temps feel like summer, and by 5:00 or 6:00 the thermometer has plummeted.
It’s not yet time for heavy pullover sweaters.
Solution? Cardigans and lightweight jackets.
For those of us who love to play with fashion (it’s not just me, right?!), layering give us lots of opportunities to get creative. One way we can make fall layering more interesting is by choosing our layering toppers in the trending fall colors (remember that post I did a few weeks ago about the fall color trends?).
I love shopping for new wardrobe pieces as much as the next gal, but in this post I dove into the layering pieces I already have and found several that evoke this fall’s trending colors. I’ll bet that you have some pieces already that can fit right into the season’s color trends. Just in case you want to perk up your layers with something new, I’ve curated some cardigans and light jackets in those colors that you’ll find in the two widgets at the end of this post.
Where Do We Start?
We all have a uniform of some sort on our “regular” days. Maybe yours at this time of year is a pair of pants and a lightweight top, or joggers and a tee.
This is mine. A t-shirt and jeans, with whatever footwear is appropriate for the weather and/or activity (unless I’m just working at home, then it’s joggers and a t-shirt).
It’s the perfect casual outfit for early fall. And easy to add and subtract a layering topper as the weather moves from fall to summer to fall again.
Fall Layering with Fall Color Trends
Let’s jump into some ideas for layering pieces that bring in some of fall’s trending colors.
“Rose Violet” Jacket is Perfect for Fall
Add a little shine to your casual look with a satin jacket. Satin doesn’t have to mean dressed up. The juxtaposition (I’ve always wanted to use that word!) of a satin jacket and a knit fabric, like this knit tank, introduces texture variety as well as some playfulness. And the rich color definitely says fall.
Try a “High Visibility” Yellow Topper
Surprisingly, a golden toned yellow is one of this fall’s trending colors. To give it an autumn-y vibe, pair it with a neutral that leans warm, like a tan, beige, or brown top. Or, step outside your comfort zone and mix yellow with vibrant colors like purples, greens, and even reds if you’re game to push the boundaries of safe dressing.

Layer a Light Jacket in “Viva Magenta”
Red is an eye catching color in any variation. A red fall layering piece to wear over a t-shirt or tank top can bring a little whimsy or some drama to your outfit, depending on how you style it.
Neutrals Have Staying Power
“Doe” with Interesting Design Elements
A laying piece in a neutral color doesn’t have to be boring. Look for pieces that have something unique in the design. For example, this French terry jacket is styled with beautiful draping as well as interesting style features on the back. Neutrals can be paired with just about any color!
“Silver Birch” Crop Jacket
A crop jacket may not be your cup of tea, but it’s a fun style that isn’t run of the mill. When trying a style that you may not be 100% comfortable with, choose it in a neutral color so you don’t feel like it’s shouting “LOOK AT ME!” (This jacket isn’t exactly silver, but it evokes the fall color trend Silver Birch.)

Simple Cardigan in “Coconut Milk” for Layering
An off-white cardigan is a timeless staple. This chunky style in the color that aligns with Coconut Milk is very in this season and so easy to wear as a topper or even buttoned up as a top. This versatile sweater is what I grab lately more often than any other layering piece. It’s currently on sale at Gap and comes in three other colors (linked below the images).
And There’s Always the Tried & True Denim Jacket
You just can’t go wrong with a denim jacket for a layering piece as we transition to fall. A denim jacket goes with everything, from super casual to topping an out-on-the-town dress. (And, yes, it’s acceptable to wear a denim jacket with jeans!)
