Wear a Chunky Sweater
(without Feeling Chunky)
I love chunky sweaters in cold weather. They are so cozy! But . . . a chunky sweater, if not styled just right, can make us feel, well, chunky. And who wants that?!
You don’t have to be afraid to wear a chunky sweater when you incorporate these styling ideas.
Keep Your Bottoms Slim
Keep your look balanced when wearing a chunky sweater. Typically, a chunky sweater will be a bit bulky and a generous fit. So keep to a more fitted look on the bottom, whether it’s fitted pants or a slim skirt.
The general rule of thumb when pairing tops and bottoms in an outfit is that if your top is generously sized or a loose fit, then your pants or skirt should be more fitted, and vice versa. Keeping to this formula, the oversized or loose clothing piece won’t overwhelm you.
Of course, there are always exceptions to almost any rule, and a chunky sweater pair with a loose fit bottoms (think flowy or trouser-style pants) can work and present a chic look. But you have to be careful, or you end up looking like you’re wearing someone else’s clothes.
Another style idea is to add a button down shirt under the chunk sweater for added interest and dimension. Letting them hem show below the bottom of the sweater gives the look an updated, modern look and less classic than tucking in the shirt hem.
Try a French Tuck
Have you tried a French tuck with any of your tops? It’s one trick to keep a chunky sweater from adding the illusion of extra weight. It works best with a high waist pants or skirt styles.
Here’s how: Tuck in the front only of the sweater and leave the back and sides untucked. Then start to pull one side of the front tuck out, leaving one side in front tucked in. (I’m not showing the full French tuck well in the photo I just noticed, and I think the hem of the sweater on one side is just rolled a little.)
Also, to pull the eye up toward your face and add interest, wear a statement piece (in this photo I’m wearing a scarf) at the neck.
Mixing textures is a great style trick to give an outfit some extra dimension. In this look, I’ve paired a chunky black sweater with black coated denim jeans. It’s a monochromatic look (which by itself creates a unified design), but the different textures in the sweater and pants (also the suede booties), combine for a chic silhouette.
If you want to take away some of the bulk of a chunky sweater, try adding a belt in the same or a contrasting color.
Keep the Length Short
The fourth and final style idea for wearing a chunky sweater is to keep the length short. With a shorter chunky sweater, you have some latitude with your bottoms. I went with a flared pant style. The flared pants bottoms helps to balance the look of the shorter chunky sweater.
