Boyfriend jeans have been around for a long time. The first rendition of boyfriend jeans made their appearance when women actually borrowed jeans from the man in their lives and dared to wear them in public. Boyfriend jeans styles have continued to be a comfy favorite of many women and the look has become one of the most popular jeans style trends.
You may not have boyfriend jeans on your list of must-haves, but once you try a pair, you’ll likely decide it’s a style you need. That’s how I ended up with this pair of AG Ex-Boyfriend Slouchy Slim jeans. (I have no idea why they’re called ex-boyfriend rather than boyfriend; I’m guessing that it sounds a little more female forward and independent? Like: “I’m breaking up with you, but you’re not getting your jeans back!)
What Is the Boyfriend Jeans Fit?
The boyfriend jeans cut involves a slouchy, relaxed fit, as if they were actually his but tailored for her.
The intentional fit of slouchy and relaxed doesn’t mean that boyfriend jeans always have to be worn extra baggy. New iterations of the boyfriend fit include slimmer, more tapered versions that are still relaxed and slouchy but with a sleeker fit. The loose fit is flattering on just about every body type.
With more interpretations of the boyfriend jeans style, women can choose the fit that works best for them – baggy or a closer fit, high waist or a lower rise.
The jeans I’m wearing in this post are a looser fit – hence the word “slouchy” in the style name! This baggier fit can look sloppy if it’s not styled right. I found pairing these jeans with a top that has a close fit gives balance to the somewhat baggy jeans. Another way to give definition above the waistline is to wear a looser top tucked in. By giving definition to the top, the look has a feminine vibe.
5 Ways to Style Boyfriend Jeans
Boyfriend jeans are really versatile. Wear them for hanging around, running errands, out to lunch, and even for date night.
Summer Tank & Sandals Look
Where I live, summer mornings often begin with a cool marine layer, and a tank and sandals with boyfriend jeans is the perfect outfit. Or maybe you’re someplace where the heat of summer days cools off in the evening – just switch your shorts to a pair of boyfriend jeans.
T-Shirt & Sneakers Style
Want to be comfy and look put together for an errand day, afternoon visit with friends, or a pizza night? A t-shirt, casual sneakers, and a belt for a bit of polish make the perfect outfit.
The classic look of a fitted sweater and boyfriend jeans is a fun juxtaposition – conservative on top and rebel on the bottom. The tie sneakers give the look a casual mood, but a pair of loafers would also be a perfect shoe look.
This Classic Easy Fit Shirt by Banana Republic (linked below) is the perfect top for almost any look. It gives the boyfriend jeans a classic but cool vibe, especially styled with a fun shoe, like the animal print oxfords.
Night Out Look
If you think that boyfriend jeans are too casual for a night on the town, think again! This gorgeous red off the shoulder top and (my favorite) heeled sandals absolutely elevate the boyfriend jeans to special.

Ready to add boyfriend (or ex-boyfriend) jeans to your collection? Browse the styles I’ve curated below. The first pair pictured is the AG Ex-Boyfriend Slouchy Slim that I’m wearing. Also linked are the same AG style in different washes as well as some other brands in different price ranges. AG jeans aren’t budget priced, but the fit is so good; because they fit so well and are such good quality, I wear them often. Using the cost-per-wear formula justifies the cost if I wear them often (cost of a item divided by the number of times you will/do wear it = cost per wear).
Additionally, linked below are three of the tops from this post that are among my frequent go-tos – easy to wear and well-priced.
