Banana Republic Long Cardigan
Summer to Fall Transition
Things are definitely changing. The days are noticeably shortening with morning sunrise a bit later and evening dark closing in a little earlier each day. Afternoons still feel like summer, but they are bookended with crisp mornings and cooler evenings. It’s exactly why we need summer to fall transitional pieces. Today I’m featuring a beautiful silk and cotton blend cardigan from Banana Republic.*
*The sweater comes in black and gray also; all colors are currently on sale. Also available in petite in camel and black (not on sale at this time). The sweater runs a little large and I sized down from my usual size.
A Duster Cardigan
I’m not a huge cardigan wearer, although you’d never know it by looking in my closet! A cardigan is the perfect topper for a lot of reasons. It adds a light layer for keeping a bit warm, a cardigan can be be a perfect accessory to finish your outfit, and it multitasks well by filling the role of a top or topper – just button up and your cardigan becomes a pull-over sweater.
One cardigan look I do love, however, is a long, duster-length cardigan sweater, like this one. A duster is a long-line sweater or coat that hits below the knee. (Check out another favorite duster cardigan in this post.) I don’t know why this looks appeals to me so much – maybe because it’s very slimming and there’s something about the long length that is a little different, almost a bit of a surprise (my favorite fashion accessory – surprise!).
Camel is a timeless classic color. It’s a neutral that pairs well with just about any color. The undertone shade of a particular camel color is what dictates its ideal pairings. This camel cardigan has a bit of a rosy undertone as opposed to a yellow undertone. It will go well with red, burgundy, blue, and, of course, black. Camel and black are a beautiful and classy look. It reminds me of my dream car way back when: a black convertible sports car with a tan/camel top. I never got that car, but it’s still a look I love :). Another fresh pairing with camel is gray. It was big a few years ago, and I’m still seeing it. I love the look.
This color isn’t included in the fall 2019 fashion color trends, but it truly never goes out of style. (I’ve been seeing a lot of talk about pistachio green this fall, but I haven’t been in the stores enough to verify that we will see this permeate fall fashion this season.)
I’ve styled this camel cardigan look with light neutrals to lighten the feeling since it’s still technically summer (until September 22!). Wearing a tank top under the sweater gives me flexibility to shed the top layer for summer appropriate attire when the afternoon temps climb. Also, I’m using the “column of color” rule – the same color on your top and bottom, especially under a contrasting topper like this long cardigan – is a very slimming way to dress.
Here in Northern California somewhat near the coast, the thermometer can swing 30 degrees from morning to afternoon to night – I’m serious! We have a whole different uniform each day than many other areas. I literally never leave the house without a extra layer with me.
Shoes and Handbag
I decided to wear my Vince Camuto peep toe booties for this photo shoot. I love these shoes! The heel is high for me and my everyday, casual life, but I love how slimming the look is. And, surprisingly, they are really comfortable for a shoe with a high heel. The peep toe bootie is a fun spring/summer look, but, at least for me, it’s not practical for fall and winter cold, unless I’m guaranteed to be indoors. There are still lots of peep toe booties to be had – check out Nordstrom and Zappos.
The bag is one I purchased about a year ago from Joy Susan. Joy Susan makes “vegan leather” handbags (as well as other accessories). The bags are very reasonably priced, cute styles, and really good quality. I really like to hobo bag style, and this one is sturdy and can take me through spring/summer and into fall.
Silk and Cotton
One more thing I need to mention. The blend of silk and cotton in this sweater is beautiful. For this reason alone, I may be adding another color of this sweater style to my closet. Some years ago, I had a silk/cotton blend black cardigan from Banana Republic. I loved that sweater. The fabric gave it a unique look and it layed so flat and nice when I wore it. It was one of the most versatile wardrobe pieces I’ve ever had because I was able to use it as cardigan as well as a top when it was all buttoned up. It had a luxe look. I finally just wore it out and had to say goodbye to it, but I’ve been looking for a similar sweater with that fabric combination ever since. Although this duster cardigan won’t be quite as versatile, the fabric pairing is enough to entice me to have the black one too.
