So it’s here. Swimsuit season. Summer has officially begun, and whether you love being poolside or prefer the sand and surf, chances are you’ll be donning a swimsuit sometime this summer. A swimsuit cover up is a must to complete your “swim ensemble.”
What’s Your Swimsuit Cover Style?
If your idea of a swimsuit cover up is wrapping a beach towel around you, then we need to talk! Swimsuit cover ups serve a purpose in a utilitarian sense, sure, but they can also be a great style accessory to add to your swimsuit.
In my younger days I usually opted for a pair of cutoff jeans as a “cover up” to my bikini. But those days are behind me. I now like to have something to put on over my swimsuit that can take me to the pool bar or restaurant – something that looks like clothes but is easy to stuff into my bag and easy to put on.
To look chic and cover up (after all, it is called a cover up!) when you are moving from your lounge chair or beach blanket, there are almost endless swimsuit cover up options for every taste. Many of us over the age of 40 or better focus on covering a specific area. Younger ladies, or our mature sisters gifted with enviable figures, might choose a swimsuit cover up that covers and reveals at the same time – less is more or more is less!
You don’t have to buy something new. A casual summer dress can be a perfect swimsuit cover up. Clothing pieces that can serve multiple functions when traveling (like a summer dress that you can use for a dress and a swimsuit cover up), saves space and cuts down on the laundry you need to do when you get home! So check out what you have in your closet that can double as a swimsuit cover up.
Swimsuit cover ups come in so many styles, designs, and patterns! But most of these can fit into the following categories:
- Dress (short or long)
- Boyfriend Shirt

Pool Time Ahead!
I’m off to a weekend in Southern California and am planning a bit of pool time. It’s tempting to bring an assortment of cover ups with me . . . but since my space and pool time are limited, I think I’ll take my own advice and bring a dress that I can wear to lunch or at the pool! So many choices; so few pool days!
