This summer marks the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love. Thinking about summer, it’s dawned on me that I’ve been hyper-focused on spring, as evidenced by all the blog posts with the word “spring” in them! I guess that’s not completely out in left field, since we are living spring. But my obsession with it, following the rainiest fall and winter we’ve had in recent memory, may have taken me a bit farther than desired with that topic. The official start of summer is now on the horizon (just over a month away!), and it’s time to switch gears and revel in all things summer. To kick off Dez & Dot’s 2017 summer chapter, I’m starting with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love. Let’s have fun with Summer of Love fashion inspiration!
The Summer of Love
A social phenomenon during the summer of 1967, the Summer of Love defines a time when young people gathered in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. The San Francisco happening was the most publicized. As many as 100,000 people – hippies or flower children – flocked to San Francisco, mostly to the now famous Haight-Ashbury area. But all was not love, peace, and flowers. Psychedelic drug use, homelessness, and clashes with police and San Francisco political leaders were also part of the Summer of Love.
In 1967 my family lived very close to San Francisco, so I had a heightened awareness of this Summer of Love convergence. The media had a spotlight on it, and teenagers in our neighborhood were embracing it. To me, a preteen, it sounded romantic and cool, and I remember wishing I was old enough to jump into a packed VW bus and join in.
So here we are, 50 years later, and San Francisco is revisiting the Summer of Love with a 50th anniversary commemoration. There are a variety of retrospective events that remember this time of social transformation. They celebrate the music and the culture and the love.
Summer of Love Style
Let’s have some fun celebrating the style of the late 1960’s. As we know, fashion cycles through the decades, and often styles from past eras return with an update to make them current. Summer 2017 is no different. Many current styles are reminiscent of 1967 Summer of Love fashion. On trend this summer: maxi skirts and dresses, peasant blouses, embellished jeans, bohemian styles, choker necklaces, hoop earrings, leather sandals, and graphic designs. They elicit a feeling of free spiritness, artistry, unconventionalism. They invite us to release a bit of our Type A-ness!
Channel Your Inner Summer of Love Hippie
Here are some of the Summer of Love-inspired styles that we’ll be seeing this summer. You may not want to repeat what you wore way back then (if you’re old enough to have been around at that time), but adding a piece or two to your summer repertoire may give you a fun “blast from the past.” If you’re way too young for even the most remote memory, here’s a chance to channel your inner hippie.
